The Duff Guide to Ska's 2015 Year In Review, Part 1!

(By Steve Shafer)

2015 was a challenging year at work and with family matters. Nothing terrible, mind you--I was just very busy, with lots of demands on my time that kept me from writing about so many more ska releases and shows. So, my caveat is that my year-end review is by no means comprehensive. I missed out on a lot of great releases this year, but what I did manage to write about is very much worth your attention. And should you have some money left over from all of the holiday gift-giving or gift cards you received that are burning a hole in your pocket, please consider supporting these bands/releases by purchasing their music!

This is Part 1 of The Duff Guide to Ska's 2015 Year in Review...

Dubistry: Fuel for the Fire digital album (self-released through Bandcamp) -- Dubistry are one of those terrific, hard-to-pigeonhole bands that are an awesome mash-up of many musical styles--in this case, a sophisticated blend of ska/reggae, jazz, 70s rock and R and B, and more. Early 90s ska fans will take notice that lead singer Dunia Best was in Agent 99 with Agent Jay (as well as an early version of The Slackers) and will want to begin their exploration of Dubistry with one of the more straight-up reggae/dub tracks on the album, the almost apocalyptic, call to rise up and take action of "Tomorrow" ("You have to be fuel for the fire/Before you get burned/Because you never know/Which way the road will turn..."). Then check out the sweet, lovers rock of "Give It To Me One More Time"; a great roots reggae cover of Joni Mitchell's "Blue"; and the wonderful, stripped down (acoustic guitar and percussion), campfire ska of "Roll Away." The more musically omnivorous will love the excellent Steely Dan meets Stevie Wonder-ish earworm that is "Butterfly" and the gorgeously lush and romantic "All Through the Night" (that manages to be a great "Quiet Storm"-like soft-rock/soulful reggae hybrid). Don't miss out on this release--it's so good and essential!

Eastern Standard Time: "The Dragon" b/w "Miles and Miles" 7" (self-released) -- Read The Duff Guide to Ska review here.

Flying Vipers: The Green Tape cassette (Music A.D.D.) -- Read The Duff Guide to Ska review here.

The Frightnrs: "Sharon" b/w "Admiration" 7" (Mad Decent/The Full Hundred) -- Read The Duff Guide to Ska review here.

HeavensbeeSoul Mates digital album (Trilby Records) -- Read The Duff Guide to Ska review here.

H.R. and The Scotch Bonnets: Quest EP CD (Morphius Records) -- Read The Duff Guide to Ska review here.

The Lions: Soul Riot CD/2xLP (Stones Throw) -- This is the one release that I never got around to reviewing this year because I was afraid of not being able to do it justice. I am in awe of this record. Like Fishbone's Truth and Soul or Marvin Gaye's What's Going On, The Lions' absolutely phenomenal Soul Riot is full of songs of defiance, despair, anger, and pure joy (where love and lust are concerned) that reflect the black American experience--as the nation's horrific legacy of slavery continues to play out in so many devastating ways (in particular, see "When It Rains," "At a Loss," and "Going Nowhere"). And like Fishbone's aforementioned marketer-confounding album, Soul Riot incorporates bits of many other musical genres into its heady roots reggae mix, including R and B, funk, De La Soul-like hip hop, and dancehall. With vocal duties shared by Deston Berry, Alex Desert (both of Hepcat), Malik Moore (The Bullets, Ocean 11), Black Shakespeare (cousin of Robbie), and even Angelo Moore of Fishbone (on the awesome "Rhythm Rock") and a band full of LA ska and reggae all-star musicians, the songs of social consciousness and protest have rarely sounded this good and compelling. (Did I mention their deadly cool cover of The Clash's "Magnificent Seven" recorded for the essential The Clash Goes Jamaican comp?) As far as I'm concerned, this is the album of the year.

Mento Buru: A Bailar con Mento Buru 7" (Steady Beat Records) -- Read The Duff Guide to Ska review here.

The Meow Meows: Friends on Benefits 7" EP (Jump Up Records) -- Read The Duff Guide to Ska review here.

The Reggay Lords: Run or Get Down LP (Jump Up Records) -- Read The Duff Guide to Ska review here.

The SelecterAccess All Areas CD/DVD (Edsel) -- Read The Duff Guide to Ska review here.

The SelecterSubculture CD/LP (DMF/Redeye) -- Read The Duff Guide to Ska review here.

The Specials: More Specials 2xCD reissue (Chrysalis) -- While I cringe at how many times The Specials' catalogue has been reissued in various packages (why can't Rico's That Man is Forward and Jama Rico receive this kind of attention?!), I picked up this deluxe version at the recommendation of a friend, who told me that the newly remastered More Specials (so often neglected/maligned in the past) had never sounded so good. One listen to the extraordinary, nuclear dread-filled opening to "Man at C and A"--the only song Jerry Dammers and Terry Hall ever wrote together--or the brightly masked despair of being stuck in a life with no future in Lynval Golding's brilliant "Do Nothing" and you'll be convinced.

Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra: Ska Me Forever LP/digital (Nacional) -- Read The Duff Guide to Ska review here.

Duff Review: Reggay Lords "Run or Get Down"

Jump Up Records
2015
Vinyl LP

(Review by Steve Shafer)

First, a brief biographical sketch: The Reggay Lords are an early reggae supergroup of sorts, with members from drawn from such acts as Coldspot 8, The Rudie Crew, The Pinstripes, The Hard Times (RIP), and The Forthrights (RIP), who perform dressed as 18th century English lords (replete with powdered wigs, puffy shirts, embroidered jackets or velvet robes, and the occasional mead-filled chalice) and speak in condescending (and tongue-in-cheek) tones to the ska rabble that gather to receive their musical beneficence. (Read The Duff Guide to Ska review of one of The Reggay Lords' live shows here.)

While their costumes, stage antics, and lordly attitudes are definitely entertaining and engaging (absolutely see them live if you have the chance), The Reggay Lords' music really delivers. Run or Get Down, the Lords' second album (their superb self-titled debut was released in 2013), contains track after track of highly catchy and danceable dirty reggae and is a definite "must purchase"! (Also, it's a vinyl-only release, so this is yet another in a long line of reasons to join us music luddites and dig out or buy a turntable...)

As the album cover might suggest, the Lords are highly critical of the police's abuse of power and heavy-handed treatment of the "commoners" (to use their parlance) on two of the ten cuts here (which are stingingly relevant in light of the death of Eric Garner and its impact on New York City; the years of unconstitutional "stop and frisk" policing in NYC that targeted vast numbers of innocent men of color; and how the police are used by local--and racist--governments to prey on communities of color for municipal revenue--surely, a scheme that is not limited to Ferguson, MO). The title track's lyrics lay it all out--essentially, positing that the residents of neighborhoods can regulate themselves, while the police are agents of violence and chaos:

"When I was just a boy on the corner
I never heard them shout in anger
And no man would curse or slander
Everyone had a nice street manner

And if a bully boy him come down
He get beat down by de block
And the only big man that a flash him gun
Was the one, him drunk, a cop

Everybody run or get down
He say..."

The other (rather chipper and defiant) song relating to the police is "One Day," a clear warning (and an expression of yearning for deliverance) that envisions a time of revolution when the agents of Babylon will no longer be in a position to torment and mistreat the people:

"Oh, and what a wonderful world it would be...

One day
I'll rid the world of my oppressors
One day
I'll live without my oppressors

Blood will run
Screams will carry
Babylon will run
Dreams turn reality

So Mr. Blue in black
Stay back
So Mr. Blue in black
Stay back
Soon your black heart will turn blue for you

So, what about the countless victims?
The thousands and millions
What about the countless children
Laid low by you?

So Mr. Blue in black
Stay back
So Mr. Blue in black
Stay back
Soon your black heart will turn blue for you

So, c'mon and fight, yeah!
And woman fight, too
So, c'mon and fight
For truth"

The rest of the songs on Run or Get Down aren't quite as heavy (though the "High John" is an awesome supplication to a higher, regal authority/"conquerer" to "protect me now and always do not let my enemies rest--not in a chair, not in a bed!"). "Spirit" wonders how you can come across the ghost of someone who's still alive (the walking dead are not limited to the ranks of the undead: "When a man's not in the ground, yeah/How could you see his spirit, no!"). Propelled by a buoyant popcorn reggae organ line, "Oh Lord" serves as a jubilant theme song of sorts ("You know we're working!/Reggay Lords, that's our job!"). "It's a Game," with its terrific Middle Eastern-sounding, minor-key guitar riff (shades of Dick Dale), has a tense, plodding tempo and feel that reflects the heavy burden the singer's shouldering after realizing he's surrounded by manipulative, pernicious fake friends ("It's a game to them, how they put you down/It a game to them, that's why they're always around/Put me in one spot, they told me not to move about!"). The sweetly nostalgic ice rink organ of "Big Girl" masks the loss of youth, time, and innocence (and the sadness over how the years have transformed the childhood friend--first crush?--into a stranger): "You used to be the little girl I used to play with/You used to be the little girl I used to stay with...Where did you go?"

The Upsetters-like "Nice Shoes" is a tightly-wound, organ-centric instrumental with menacing exhortations about the risks of dressing sharply in dicey neighborhoods: "Nice shoes, my brother!/Lace by lace/Block by block/Gonna take that man's shoes/Gonna leave him in his socks!" There's a Greek myth quality to the warning contained in "There Was a Woman," which recounts the story of a siren-like woman who could lure men to their death, since they could not resist her sexual attractiveness--or see the trap that it hid ("There was a woman/She threw a contest/She don't care for the rules/She don't play by the book/A woman/She threw a contest/And when a man gets speared/All she wore was her hair/The gal could do nothing but win..."). The album ends on a lighter note, with the celebratory, good times "Barrister's Ball": "Down at the Barrister's Ball/Them don't serve no tea at all/Now all the ladies line up in the attic/Across the room and give we a wink/They never wear no funny trousers/You don't what will arouse her." Nice up the dance, indeed.

The ska scene needs more royalty like this! Make sure to hail the Reggay Lords and pick up their Run or Get Down now!

Duff Gig Review: The Reggay Lords and The Copacetics at Electric Avenue on 2/23/13!

Wot: The Reggay Lords and The Copacetics
When: Saturday, March 23, 2013
Where: Electric Avenue at Characters NYC, Manhattan

(Write-up by Steve Shafer)

The day before our event, Electric Avenue's start time had to be pushed back a bit, as the pub booked a last-minute party in their back room for a guy whose fiance broke off their engagement the weekend of their wedding! (Since he had all of his friends in town anyway, they decided to have a condolence party of sorts.) I set up my DJ equipment and started spinning some ska tracks during the last hour of their event (was it too cheeky of me to kick off my set with The Beat's cover of "Tears of a Clown"?!), and a bunch of the ex-groom-to-be's guests hung out for part, if not all, of the night's performances.

Since we had some extra time to hang around, Marc and I spent some time with Larry, one of the afternoon barkeeps who grew up in Ireland and went to shows by just about every punk and post-punk band that I was listening to on WLIR when I was a teenager lost in Yonkers in the first half of the 1980s. Over a few beers, he told us stories from the times he saw The Undertones, The Jam, Bob Marley, Secret Affair, The Buzzcocks, The Ruts, The Clash, Joe Strummer, The Tom Robinson B and and more, as well as music-related tales from the football terraces and city streets, where daring to be different was an open invitation to all for a beating from cops and fellow citizens alike. Every time I talk with Larry, I learn something new about some of my favorite bands. So, if you're ever at Characters when he's behind the bar, make sure to ask him about your favorite post-punk act and be prepared to be schooled by a man who experienced it all first-hand.

For this night, The Copacetics had journeyed down I-95 from Providence, Rhode Island for their first NYC gig ever (at Electric Avenue, no less) and it was cool to see/hear their mix of ska with blues, early 50s rock, soul, and Doo-wop. Singer, trombonist, and band manager Matt D. (one of the nicest people I've met lately, actually) led this young band through a terrific, lively, and fun set of 14 tunes, mostly originals (See "Cookies" and "I Don't Know" below) with some choice covers--including Laurel Aitken's calypso cut "Zombie Jamboree" and the essential rocksteady song "Love Me Forever," by Carlton and The Shoes. (Any ska bands looking for a place to play between NYC and Boston should get in touch with Matt D. and The Copacetics--they organize regular gigs in Providence area and will hook you up in front of a crowd! Top bands like The Toasters, The Allstonians, and The Scofflaws already have shared the stage with them...)

While it's highly entertaining just to witness The Reggay Lords performing in powdered wigs, puffy shirts, velvet robes, and masks (facetiously condescending to us "commoners," like they are out of King Louis XVI's court--read my Duff Guide to Ska interview with Lord Point for a taste)--you might be tempted to dismiss their act as shtick.

But don't let their preposterous costumes deceive you. The Reggay Lords (really, a NYC-area supergroup comprised of members of The Forthrights, The Hard Times, The Rudie Crew, and The Slackers) are the real deal--and are making some of the best rocksteady and reggae you could ever hope for. Plus, their extraordinary new, self-titled digital album is probably one of the best and most original-sounding releases you'll hear all year. No kidding. (Someone, please, please, please put this out on vinyl!)

Led by vocalist Lord Point--who somehow managed to hold onto his giant goblet brimming with Guinness for the majority of their set--The Reggay Lords played most of the songs off their stellar debut album--about chasing good times; being able to get what you want; battling for power in a relationship; women who do you bad; how money won't fix all problems; throwing off one's oppressors; questioning the real meaning of freedom; and an anti-Pope diatribe--plus a few others (notably, "Stereo On," which is about the simple joys of listening to music and how it makes live worth living, is a new absolutely favorite cut of mine). Their set and performances were spot-on fantastic (doubters can screen the videos I shot below) and I'm definitely eager to see 'em again soon! Ska, rocksteady, and reggae fans should be mad scrambling to see them and picking up their ($6!) digital album. Do your part!

Which brings me to a little bit of editorializing...

While people are beginning to hype what they are calling the "fourth wave" of ska (though ironically enough this seems to be based on the considerable nostalgic enthusiasm for reformed ska bands popular in the 1990s--not that there's anything wrong with loving these bands; in fact, there's a lot to love!), many of the acts, both new and old, that have been keeping the scene going--continually playing gigs on the underground and releasing vital new music during the 2000s and beyond--very much deserve fans' interest and support. (I'm always psyched to learn about great new bands/releases!) They've been the ones taking on the chin during the lean years, so please consider making that extra effort to show up to at least a few gigs each month (remember when seeing bands play live was fun--well, it still is! Why else do you think I help organize the Electric Avenue nights for free?) and spending the ridiculously little amount of cash on buying a digital download, CD, or LP (the price of buying recorded music is generally cheaper than it was in the 1990s!).

If there is going to be a sustainable "fourth wave" (can't we think of a better name with which to brand it?!), it can't be built on nostalgia alone. So, dig deeper. You'll find all sorts of fantastic new bands and releases to feast on!

Duff Interview: Lord Point of The Reggay Lords

As The Reggay Lords are headlining an upcoming show at our monthly ska/reggae night at Electric Avenue on Saturday, February 23, 2013 (with The Copacetics from Rhode Island opening)--and they have an excellent, new self-titled 10-track digital album out through Whatevski Records for $6--we thought it might be a good idea to check in the band and see what they are all about.

Fortunately, Lord Point was in a beneficent mood and willing to entertain our very humble questions...

The Duff Guide to Ska: Who are the Reggay Lords and where did they come from?

Lord Point: First and foremost, I must mention the courage it must have taken to come to us Lords with questions. This, luckily has caught me in a moment of whimsy and so I will partake of such obvious foolishness, knowing full well that all common people across many lands and shires are aware of the Reggay Lords and continue to rejoice in our existence. This will be catered towards those people and no others.

You find yourself reading this and may have concern for your own soul in bewilderment of this situation, you will most likely be exiting this manuscript of electronic data.

Now then...

we Lords are myself Lord Point administering our vocal rally...a good Lord always puts himself at the top of the list.

Lord Nugent, the Honourable Lord Wartell, Lord Donnelly, Lord Baptiste, and our beloved "Time Lord" Lord Wright.

We hail from the people's shire of Brueklynn, NY

.

DGTS: Why did you choose to play reggae and how would you describe your sound (I associate lords and ladies with 17th and 18th century harpsichord music)?

LP: As my reader was delivering this second question, myself, the reader, and this Lords scribe all had a fair belly chuckle. It would be harmful to digitally describe the glorious sounds in which the Reggay Lords frolic to simple commoners like one's self. But, in this world of wanton investigation, I will make it known that we have a sound not unlike the roaring of a lion...the crumbling of Babylon...or the shouts of freedom. You owe us nothing for this. It is out of pure love for the common people that we make such an amazing sound. Which, I will segue into question three...

DGTS: Why do you play for the hoi polloi? What do you hope to teach us?

LP: Common people have a choice to be Lords. Unfortunately for them, we have already taken the Reggay Lords slot, so you will find it impossible for any other group to come close to our greatness. However, fear not! There are many other titles that may need to find filling, such as Knitting Lord, or perhaps a Basket Weaving Lord. The world works in depressingly similar ways and so it is left up to us Lords to keep up the mysticism.

DGTS: How does one behave in the presence of musical royalty (for instance, at the upcoming Electric Avenue show)?

LP: Fret not to yourself of calling upon us by our given names and titles of Lords. We understand that beauty is often not easily accepted and it must be horrible for you all to have to look at your own image in the glassy void of a mirror in your humble abodes from a period of gazing at near perfection. People, please try to find the time AFTER our performance and let the musical choir seep into your soul, so you may rest more easily upon knowing the sure dissatifaction that surely must stem from not wearing a Lords wig. As a showing of love to our common people, we will allow commoners to wear their own "lords" wig in the privacy of their homes. Please take no pictures of yourselves, as it will surely bring on a heavy load of anguish to others, and an obvious tease to your own soul and well-being.

DGTS: Are you planning to commit your music to vinyl and/or bytes?

LP: Many trees have been cut, honey bees' nests plundered, squid drained free of all ink, and pressmen and women have been alerted as to the coming of a first Reggay Lords musical release. As that has hundreds of commoners busy at the presses, we are not ones to rest on our laurels and have been quite busy fancying up ye old Proud Lands Studio and making way for even more musical plundering.

DGTS: Any parting words for the common people?

LP: WE ARE REGGAY LORDS, YOU ARE ALL WELL AWARE! HEAR, HEAR!

+ + + +

The Reggay Lords are:

Lord Point - Speaker of the House of Lords
Time Lord - dulcimer and choir
Barrister Lord Philip II - snare, timpani, and choir
Lord Nugent - lute and percussion
Lord Oliver - Marquis de la Basse
Lord Donnelly - lead lute
